About Jagrani Abhiyaan

Jagrani Abhiyaan is a transformative initiative launched by SNDT University in collaboration with Nav Srejan Trust. This movement is dedicated to empowering young women across India through the power of storytelling, meditation, and mentorship.

Our trained Jagranis visit colleges in major cities, creating intimate spaces where they share inspiring stories of India's most remarkable women leaders, freedom fighters, scientists, artists, and changemakers. These sessions combine storytelling with meditation practices and open discussions about life's challenges and opportunities.

More than just storytelling, Jagrani Abhiyaan creates a supportive community where young women can find guidance, inspiration, and the confidence to pursue their dreams while staying connected to their cultural roots.

The Story Behind Our Name

"Jagrani" carries a profound legacy that connects us to India's freedom struggle and the spirit of awakening. The name is inspired by Jagrani Devi, the beloved mother of the legendary freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Just as Jagrani Devi nurtured and inspired one of India's most fearless revolutionaries, our Jagrani Abhiyaan aims to awaken the revolutionary spirit within every young woman. The word "Jagrani" itself means "the one who awakens" or "the awakened one" - symbolizing our mission to awaken consciousness, courage, and purpose in the hearts of India's daughters.

We carry forward this legacy of strength, sacrifice, and unwavering determination, honoring the mothers and women who have shaped our nation's destiny.

Rediscovering Our Ancient Rishikas

Long before history began recording the achievements of women, ancient India was blessed with extraordinary Rishikas - female sages whose spiritual brilliance and philosophical insights formed the very foundation of Indian wisdom. Yet today, their names and contributions remain largely unknown to modern generations.

These luminous women were not mere followers - they were pioneers, questioners, and wisdom-keepers who contributed directly to the Vedas, challenged the greatest philosophers of their time, and established profound spiritual truths that continue to guide humanity.

Gargi Vachaknavi

The fearless philosopher who challenged Sage Yajnavalkya in the royal court, her profound questions about the nature of existence are recorded in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.

Maitreyi

The wise wife of Yajnavalkya, whose philosophical dialogues about the nature of self and consciousness form some of the most profound passages in the Upanishads.

Lopamudra

The enlightened wife of Sage Agastya, she composed hymns in the Rig Veda and is celebrated for her spiritual wisdom and poetic brilliance.

Apala

A Rishika who composed hymns to Indra, demonstrating that women were equal participants in Vedic spiritual practices and philosophical discourse.

Romasa

A female sage mentioned in the Rig Veda, representing the tradition of women spiritual teachers in ancient India.

Vishvavara

A Rishika who contributed to Vedic literature, showing that women were integral to preserving and transmitting spiritual knowledge.

Why Their Stories Matter Today

These ancient Rishikas prove that Indian women have always been intellectuals, spiritual leaders, and wisdom-keepers. By sharing their forgotten stories, we help young women understand that seeking knowledge, questioning established norms, and pursuing spiritual growth are not modern concepts - they are their birthright, passed down through thousands of years of feminine brilliance.
